CROSSING TIME
Official Hunt Rules
Crossing Time is a skill-based puzzle and outdoor treasure hunt produced by Low Rents Research (the “Sponsor”). Participation is voluntary. These Official Hunt Rules govern eligibility, purchases, puzzle access, field conduct, winner verification, and the Grand Prize. By participating, purchasing hunt content, or accepting a complimentary path, you agree to these Rules.
1. Eligibility
Participants must be 18 years of age or older at the time of participation. Participation is void where prohibited by law. Participants are responsible for determining whether participation is lawful in their jurisdiction.
Employees, contractors, playtesters, and any person materially involved in designing, administering, securing, or possessing confidential information about the Hunt are not eligible to claim the Grand Prize.
2. What a Purchase Provides
A purchase provides access to the specific digital puzzle experience identified at checkout. Depending on the product selected, that may include hunt entry, immediate access to a puzzle path, access to archived puzzle content, or other digital hunt materials.
A purchase does not purchase the Grand Prize, ownership of any portion of the Grand Prize, a guaranteed solution, a guaranteed advancement in the Hunt, or a guaranteed ability to locate or claim the Grand Prize.
Some puzzle experiences may also be released publicly on a schedule. Where a complete archive is offered for purchase, the purchase provides earlier or consolidated access to that content; it does not create an additional Grand Prize or a separate claim to the Grand Prize.
3. Multiple Puzzle Paths
Crossing Time may offer multiple independently designed puzzle experiences. Prices may differ because the experiences vary in format, complexity, production, content, and method of delivery.
Participants may obtain one or more paths. Access to additional paths provides additional puzzle content but does not create additional ownership interests in the Grand Prize or multiple winning claims.
4. Grand Prize
The Grand Prize is the physical prize designated by Sponsor for Crossing Time. Sponsor may publish a description and an approximate value separately from these Rules. Any stated value is an estimate and may change over time.
The Grand Prize remains owned and controlled by Sponsor until an eligible participant successfully completes the verification procedure and Sponsor confirms the winner and transfers possession.
5. First Finder and Winning Claim
The potential winner is the first eligible participant to successfully complete the required Grand Prize verification procedure. Merely reaching the vicinity of the final location, seeing or touching a concealment, photographing an object, observing another participant, or stating that you arrived first does not by itself establish a winning claim.
The final stage will provide a designated method for initiating a claim. Participants must follow the claim instructions provided there.
6. Verification Procedure
Sponsor may require a claimant to provide the registered hunter identity or Hunter Code, a unique verification code or artifact associated with the final stage, photographs or other evidence reasonably requested by Sponsor, and any additional information necessary to confirm eligibility and completion.
Electronic timestamps, website records, radio or network telemetry, photographs, video, witness information, participant communications, physical evidence, and other reliable records may be considered. No single electronic record is necessarily conclusive if there is credible evidence of delay, malfunction, interference, or error.
7. Ties and Disputes
If two or more participants appear to complete the final stage at substantially the same time, priority will be determined from the earliest verifiable completion of the required claim procedure using the available evidence.
If the available evidence does not permit Sponsor reasonably to determine priority, Sponsor may establish an additional skill-based tiebreaker under substantially equal conditions. The winner will not be selected by a random drawing or coin flip.
Sponsor will make reasonable good-faith determinations concerning Hunt administration, verification, and disputes based on these Rules and the available evidence.
8. Technical Systems and Failures
Crossing Time may use websites, email, Bluetooth or BLE devices, radio or mesh communications, mobile devices, batteries, third-party networks, and other electronic systems. These systems may experience interruption, latency, battery depletion, interference, hardware failure, software error, or communications delay.
Unless Sponsor expressly states otherwise, failure of an electronic system does not itself invalidate the Hunt, establish a winning claim, or entitle a participant to the Grand Prize.
Sponsor may use a manual verification method, alternate clue-delivery method, replacement device, replacement communications system, or functionally equivalent procedure when reasonably necessary to preserve safety, fairness, or Hunt integrity.
9. Hunt Pause, Modification, Relocation, or Termination
Sponsor may pause, modify, relocate, postpone, or terminate all or part of the Hunt when circumstances outside Sponsor’s reasonable control materially affect participant safety, legal access, Hunt integrity, prize security, or the ability to conduct the Hunt substantially as intended.
Such circumstances may include wildfire, flooding, severe weather, government closure, property-access changes, theft, vandalism, destruction or removal of hunt infrastructure, communications failure, natural disaster, or discovery that a clue unintentionally directs participants toward an unsafe or unauthorized location.
10. Refunds
Digital puzzle purchases are generally non-refundable after the purchased content has been accessed or made available to the purchaser.
Failure to solve a puzzle, locate a checkpoint, complete the Hunt, or win the Grand Prize does not make a purchase refundable.
If Sponsor permanently cancels a purchased experience before substantially all purchased digital content has been made available, Sponsor may provide a refund, credit, replacement experience, or other appropriate remedy based on the circumstances and applicable law.
11. Property Access and Search Conduct
No trespassing is required or permitted. No clue should be interpreted as requiring entry onto private property, entry into a closed or restricted area, climbing fences or locked gates, damaging vegetation or structures, digging, swimming, entering hazardous waterways, or violating posted rules or applicable law.
If a participant believes a clue requires prohibited, illegal, or unsafe conduct, the participant should assume that interpretation is incorrect.
Participants must respect public and private property, wildlife, historic resources, other visitors, and the environment. Leave locations in the same or better condition than you found them.
12. Prohibited Conduct
The following conduct is prohibited:
- Trespassing or knowingly entering a closed, restricted, or unauthorized area.
- Digging, damaging land, vegetation, structures, historic resources, hunt equipment, or any cache or clue infrastructure.
- Removing, relocating, disabling, altering, blocking, jamming, spoofing, or impersonating Hunt beacons, radios, websites, devices, or other infrastructure.
- Hacking, attempting unauthorized access, exploiting vulnerabilities, or interfering with the website, APIs, administrator systems, accounts, or other technical systems.
- Impersonating another hunter, using another participant’s account or Hunter Code without permission, or submitting fabricated verification evidence.
- Harassing, threatening, stalking, doxxing, intentionally obstructing, or physically interfering with another participant.
- Knowingly publishing false information while representing it as an official Crossing Time clue, instruction, rule, or organizer communication.
- Searching while impaired or engaging in reckless conduct that creates an unreasonable risk to yourself or others.
13. Safety and Assumption of Risk
Crossing Time may involve optional outdoor travel and activities that can include hiking, uneven terrain, weather exposure, wildlife, vehicle travel, and areas with limited cellular coverage. Participants are responsible for evaluating their own abilities, equipment, route, weather, access conditions, and surroundings before proceeding.
Participation is voluntary, and participants assume the ordinary risks associated with the activities they choose to undertake. Nothing in the Hunt should be interpreted as an instruction to undertake an activity that is illegal, unsafe, or beyond the participant’s abilities.
Participants are responsible for costs they incur in connection with travel, medical care, rescue, evacuation, equipment, communications, or other personal expenses.
14. No Guarantee of Success
Purchase does not guarantee that you will solve the puzzles, reach a checkpoint, locate the final stage, or win the Grand Prize. Crossing Time is intended to be challenging, participants may solve clues at different rates, and some participants may never complete a purchased path.
15. Taxes
The verified winner is solely responsible for federal, state, and local taxes arising from receipt of the Grand Prize. Sponsor may require information reasonably necessary for tax reporting and may issue any tax forms required by law.
16. Rule Integrity and Changes
Sponsor may correct typographical errors, clarify ambiguous language, address an unforeseen safety or technical issue, or make other reasonable administrative changes that do not unfairly alter the core skill-based nature of the Hunt. Material changes will be posted with an updated Rules version or effective date.
If a conflict exists between promotional material and these Official Hunt Rules, these Rules control.
17. Governing Law
These Rules and the administration of Crossing Time are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles, except where applicable law requires otherwise. Participation is void where prohibited.
